There is hereby created within the public utilities commission the 9-1-1 service program, headed by an Ohio 9-1-1 coordinator in the unclassified civil service pursuant to division (A)(9) of section 124.11 of the Revised Code. The coordinator shall be appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the commission chairperson and shall report directly to the chairperson. On May 6, 2005, the chairperson shall appoint an interim coordinator and, upon submission of a list of nominees by the Ohio 9-1-1 council pursuant to section 5507.65 of the Revised Code, shall consider those nominees in making the final appointment and in appointing any subsequent coordinator. The chairperson may request the council to submit additional nominees and may reject any of the nominees. The chairperson shall fix the compensation of the coordinator. The chairperson shall evaluate the performance of the coordinator after considering the evaluation and recommendations of the council under section 5507.65 of the Revised Code.
The Ohio 9-1-1 coordinator shall administer the wireless 9-1-1 government assistance fund as specified in sections 5507.53 and 5507.55 of the Revised Code. The coordinator shall carry out the coordinator's duties under this chapter. The chairperson may establish additional duties of the coordinator based on a list of recommended duties submitted by the Ohio 9-1-1 council pursuant to section 5507.65 of the Revised Code. The chairperson may assign one or more commission employees to assist the coordinator in carrying out the coordinator's duties.
