Rule 4758-5-09 | Requirements for certification of Ohio prevention specialist (OCPS).

 

To be certified as a prevention specialist (OCPS) the applicant shall:

(A) Submit a formal application including:

(1) Suitable documentation;

(2) An application fee;

(3) A personal attestation statement agreeing to practice by the code of ethical standards adopted by the board; and

(4) A recommendation and suitable documentation as follows:

(a) Provided directly from the applicants' supervisor.

(b) Provided in a manner specified by the board.

(B) After approval of the application by the board, receive a passing score on the IC&RC prevention specialist (PS) examination.

(C) Provide an official transcript from an accredited school or university that verifies an associates degree or higher degree.

(D) Held an active prevention specialist assistant (OCPSA) certification for a minimum of eight months.

(E) Complete two thousand hours of prevention work experience while holding an active registered applicant (RA) or prevention specialist assistant (OCPSA) certification which shall include a minimum of twenty percent of those hours devoted to planning or delivering prevention services.

A minimum of two hundred and twenty hours of work in the prevention performance domains in paragraph (F) of this rule.

(F) A minimum of ten hours must be performed in each one of the prevention performance domains as follows:

(1) Planning and evaluation;

(2) Prevention education and delivery;

(3) Communication;

(4) Public policy and environmental change; and

(5) Professional growth and responsibilities.

(G) Complete the hours of approved education in paragraph (H) of this rule, as follows:

In addition to paragraph (E) of this rule, one hundred twenty hours of education.

(1) Must be prevention related specific education;

(2) Fifty per cent of the total hours shall be completed within five years from the date of application;

(3) Twenty-four hours must be alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention specific; and

(4) Completion may be through:

(a) Board approved continuing education units (CEU)

(b) Courses completed from an accredited school or university, or

(c) A combination of paragraphs (G)(4)(a) and (G)(4)(b) of this rule.

(H) The education content and required hours as follows:

(1) Planning and evaluation: minimum of three hours;

(2) Prevention education and service delivery: minimum of three hours;

(3) Communication: minimum of three hours;

(4) Community organization: minimum of three hours;

(5) Public policy and environmental change: minimum of three hours;

(6) Professional growth and responsibility: minimum of forty hours to include:

(a) Prevention science: minimum of twenty hours.

(b) Prevention specific ethics education: minimum of six hours with a maximum of nine hours.

(c) Cultural humility: minimum of three hours with a maximum of eight hours.

(I) The board shall have sole discretion to determine if documentation submitted is suitable.
