Rule 4765-7-15 | Paramedic course curriculum.
(A) An EMS training course for a certificate to practice as a paramedic shall be in accordance with division (E) of section 4765.16 of the Revised Code and this rule. The paramedic training course shall be competency-based and conducted in accordance with the "National EMS Education Standards" approved by NHTSA in programs approved by the board, and consistent with the scope of practice set forth in rule 4765-17-03 of the Administrative Code. The referenced national approved standards are required core competencies for instruction in a paramedic training course. Elements of the scope of practice not referenced in the "National EMS Education Standards" are added competencies that may be taught at the discretion of the EMS training program. Such paramedic training course shall consist of didactic instruction and skills laboratory education in accordance with the requirements as recommended by the committee on accreditation for emergency medical services professions (CoAEMSP). (B) In addition to meeting the requirements in paragraph (A) of this rule, during the paramedic training course, students must demonstrate competencies by successfully completing the hospital/clinical experience and field experience requirements as recommended by the committee on accreditation of educational programs for the emergency medical services professions (CoAEMSP).
(C) In addition to the competencies listed in the "National EMS Education Standards" a paramedic training course shall consist of a minimum of two hours of education on identifying and interacting with individuals with dementia.
(D) An accredited institution offering a paramedic training course, as outlined in paragraphs (A) and (B) of this rule, shall evaluate student competency as recommended by the committee on accreditation of educational programs for the emergency medical services professions (CoAEMSP).
(E) A paramedic refresher course shall be competency-based and consist of the subject areas as listed in the "Paramedic Refresher Training Program" education standards approved by the board. Certificate holders completing this course will receive forty-eight hours of continuing education credit for renewal.
(F) An accredited or approved institution offering a refresher course, as outlined in paragraph (D) of this rule, shall provide for regular evaluation of student performance and achievement through written and practical testing, prior to issuance of a certificate of completion.
