During the course of an audit, including a performance audit, of the department of transportation, the auditor of state, and any independent accountants or consultants necessary to carry out the statutory responsibilities of the auditor of state, may access any system the department uses or maintains. The director of transportation and employees of the department shall assist the auditor of state with accessing the department's systems. The auditor of state, and independent accountants and consultants retained by the auditor of state, shall comply with all state and federal privacy and confidentiality laws that apply to the content of the systems the auditor of state accesses.
