Rule 4715-9-01.5 | Proper placement of interim therapeutic restorations by a dental hygienist.
An authorizing dentist may order a dental hygienist to place interim therapeutic restorations as defined in division (A)(3) of section 4715.43 of the Revised Code. To place interim therapeutic restorations, the dental hygienist must have completed the requirements set forth in paragraph (A) or (B) of this rule.
(A) The dental hygienist has successfully completed a one-hour course in placement of therapeutic restorations dedicated solely to the proper placement of interim therapeutic restorations, and shall include both didactic education and clinical hands-on training as part of the curriculum. The course must be taken through a board-approved sponsor of continuing education as listed in rule 4715-8-02 of the Administrative Code, and shall at a minimum, include the following:
(1) Biological background information, including, but not limited to, materials used in and the scientific basis for the proper placement of interim therapeutic restorations.
(2) Proper isolation and placement technique, including, but not limited to, the use of cotton rolls, iso-vac, or similar devices for maintaining a dry field.
(3) Knowledge of poor seal with interim therapeutic restorations, including, but not limited to, the consequences of a poor seal, leakage, and re-cavitation.
(4) Recognition and detection of dental caries that have been arrested.
(5) Replacement of the interim therapeutic restoration, including, but not limited to, the necessity of a new diagnosis by a dentist before reapplication.
(B) A dental hygienist shall be exempt from the one-hour course provided in paragraph (A) of this rule for any of the following:
(1) The dental hygienist holds a current license, certificate, permit, registration, or other credential issued by another state for the placement of interim therapeutic restorations if the training received is substantially equivalent, as determined by the board, to the required hour and content requirements of the course described in paragraph (A) of this rule;
(2) The dental hygienist has completed the course requirements for interim therapeutic restorations as set forth in paragraph (A) of this rule within their educational program prior to obtaining licensure; or
(3) The dental hygienist has completed one hour of continuing education of didactic education and completes the clinical experience in the dental office in which the dental hygienist is employed or serving an externship. The employing/supervising dentist must certify to the sponsor of the continuing education course that the clinical experience was completed to competency.
